Adopt-A-River
What is the Adopt-a-River Program?
The Adopt-A-River program encourages individuals, neighborhoods and organizations to “adopt” a section of the Trinity River by performing river cleanups in assigned areas. The overall objectives of the program are to keep the river free of litter while educating the public on the effects of nonpoint source pollution. Nonpoint source pollution enters our waterways when rainfall washes oil, lawn fertilizers and clippings, litter and other trash into our storm drains. These pollutants are then washed into the nearest body of water, usually a neighborhood creek, and then to the Trinity River – not to a water treatment facility like most believe. This
program is a joint effort between the Tarrant Regional Water District and Streams
and Valleys. Streams and Valleys is a non-profit organization focused on the protection
and beautification of the Trinity River corridor.
What are the program’s goals?
Our Adopt-a-River Program has two major components – education and the actual cleanup:
Education – through education we want to help citizens understand the impact
of nonpoint source pollution and make the connection between storm drains, neighborhood
creeks and the Trinity River. Presentations will be facilitated to groups joining
the Adopt-a-River program and other community groups as requested.
Cleanup - the actual hands on experience. Organized groups will physically
pick up trash and debris along the river banks.
How does the program work?
The program has adoptable sections in both the Clear and West Forks of the Trinity River. Individuals and groups will be matched to a section of the river, preferably in their neighborhood. Upon approval, TRWD will identify the drainage areas to that section of the river and provide a neighborhood map
Details
- There are a minimum of five persons for a river section.
